Company History

Working in one of Vermont's finest wood-fired bakeries in the spring of 2003, two men got to talking about going into business for themselves. Troy Griffis, a skilled and dedicated organic gardener, wanted year-round work hand-crafting organic foods with a business of his own. Mark Pruhenski, a former coffee-shop owner in Massachusetts, had his eye on roasting fine organic coffees in Vermont.

In January of 2004 Awake first appeared on shelves, and was served in coffee-shops around Vermont and Massachusetts. As the word spread, so to did the coffee. Awake can now be found in most of Northern Vermont's major co-ops, along with select coffee shops, markets & delis, offices and homes around the state. The six signature blends were born of careful attention to detail in the roasting process and a constant awareness of the most important detail- taste!

Troy has since taken over with great energy and enthusiasm- roasting the high quality organic coffees that people have come to expect from Awake. Thank you for visiting, and enjoy the coffee.

The Source

Large scale coffee production takes place along the thermal equator, and not in the continental United States. So we rely heavily on the global market and the dedicated work of the farmers growing coffee all around the world. We are fortunate enough to receive some of the best coffees out of Indonesia, Africa, South America and Central America.
